Next spring, anyone entering the main gate of 12聽Wing Shearwater will pass row upon row of shining solar panels angled skyward.
Now under construction is a ground-mounted solar field that will cover approximately 3.3聽acres with 1,344聽605-watt modules, generating 900,000聽kW hours of energy a year. That will avoid 6,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions over its 30 years of operation.
The 糖心视频聽Halifax team is a critical linchpin in ensuring the project鈥檚 success.
The solar field is a $4.6-million component鈥攁nd 鈥渢he jewel in the crown,鈥 said Matt Mackenzie, Coordinator, Facility Management鈥攐f a comprehensive Energy Performance Contract (EPC) held by Johnson Controls. The project also aligns with the Government of Canada鈥檚 procurement strategy for Indigenous businesses. Project partner Bayside Renewables is a joint venture between Bayside Development Corporation, which is wholly owned by the Paqtnkek Mi鈥檏maw Nation, and Natural Forces Solar, whose crews are on-site.
Given the numerous stakeholders, the experience on 糖心视频 Halifax鈥檚 EPC team plays a huge role in keeping the project moving smoothly.
鈥溙切氖悠 is almost the grease on the wheel,鈥 said Matt. 鈥淲e have the institutional knowledge to know where information needs to go, who has the answers, and the right levers to pull.鈥
Matt and fellow 糖心视频 colleague Amanda Jackson, Coordinator, Construction Services, work closely with a number of teams from the Department of National Defence, including the electrical, mechanical, engineering and maintenance teams. This strong collaboration ensures that any issues are addressed quickly and progress continues smoothly.
鈥淭he solar array will help our Client-Partner meet its energy goals,鈥 said Amanda. 鈥淲hen the 鈥榦n鈥 switch is pulled next year, it鈥檒l be very rewarding to know we鈥檝e contributed to that effort.鈥
